Kenny's Mayo overcome first hurdle

Oscar Traynor Cup

Mayo League 5

Innishowen League 3

In Milebush Park

Mayo's Brendan Kenny will be left scratching his head as to how his side didn't win their opening Oscar Traynor Cup game by more than two goals in Milebush on Sunday. Mayo were leading by a scoreline of 5-1 one with four minutes to go, but managed to let in two late goals and miss a penalty with the last kick of the game from Dessie O'Malley to end up winning 5-3.

The game was level at half time with Michael Duffy giving Mayo the lead 20 minutes in when he headed a Brendan Nallen cross to the back of the net, but Mayo gave away a spot kick before the break to let Innishowen back into the game. However the second half saw a much improved Mayo performance until the final few minutes, David Horkan put Mayo 2-1 up when he finished off a ball from Dessie O'Malley to the net, then Michael Duffy got his second of the game when he tucked away the rebound from a Dessie O'Malley shot which was saved, before two goals from O'Malley one from the penalty spot had Mayo home and dry. But Mayo took their foot off the gas and Innishowen nicked in for two late goals, before O'Malley missed the opportunity to make it 6-1 for the home-side at the end.

Mayo's final group game in the Oscar Traynor Cup is against Galway and has been initially penciled in for Friday night December 12, under the lights in Terryland Park.
