Concern has been expressed by the Fine Gael leader to the damage to the pedestrian crossing between Scoil Raifteiri and Davitt College in Castlebar.
The lights have been inactive for a period of time and many people believe this is associated with the new roundabout at Lidl. However, the lights have been switched off because of people lodging nails into the button to activate the lights constantly. This action can only be described as blatant vandalism, said Deputy Enda Kenny.
Dep Kenny continued: “I have been contacted numerous occasions about this matter as over 1,000 students use this area on a school day. These lights have been deactivated as a result of vandalism which results in the lights activating on a constant basis day and night regardless of whether anybody crosses the road. I am making a call to those responsible to stop this action as it may result in a serious accident. These lights being deactivated mean pupils and students must cross the road unassisted during times of peak traffic volumes. It is time for those responsible to take consideration of their actions and look at the serious risks they are making others face.”
