Ballyhaunis
The Ted Webb memorial stroke play competition was won by John Jordan who scored 68, the same score as Michael Horan with Jordan winning on handicap. Paul Finnegan came third on 70, with Tommy Moran taking the gross also with a 70. The ladies’ section was won by Kung Fanning with a score of 73, Anne Glavey came second with a score of 78, and Mariette Potgieter came third with 80. The gross prize was won by Laurena Freeley who scored 80 off 13. The club will be holding its annual fancy dress party in the club house tonight (October 30 ) at 9pm.
Claremorris
Pat Connaughton was the winner of the competition last weekend sponsored by McHughs Costcutters, Ballindine with a score of 44pts, he finished one point ahead of Neil Sheridan in second place on 43 points. Third place went to Laurence Daly who scored 42pts with James Prendergast taking the gross prize with a score of 28pts. The ladies’ competition was won by Marie Healy who scored 44pts, and Christina Rush finished in second place with 38 pts.
The clubs winter league which is this year sponsored by the McWilliam Park Hotel, will get under way on November 23. The league is for teams of four, with 15 holes in the competition, one score counting in the first five holes, two scores in the next five holes ,and three scores in the final three holes. The best seven scores over 10 weeks count towards qualification for the final, which will see 25 teams go into the final which will be played as an four ball better ball over 18 holes.
Westport
The gents’ Am-Am was won by the team of MJ O’Malley, Martin Conway, Mick Higgins, and John F O’Malley with 92pts. Second place went to Eugene Cranley, Willie Maxwell, John Gavin and John McTaggart on 91pts. The bronze medal position was taken by John Mannion, Kevin Cusack, Seamus Gill and John Moore on 90pts. The ladies single Stableford was won by Jackie Di Lucia who scored 33pts, Mary McNicholas came second 31pts (back nine ), Nuala Moody third with 31pts, and Kay Browne finished off in fourth with 27pts.
Mary McNicholas had a very successful end of season outing in Mulranny Golf Club on Friday week last. When the cards were tallied, Maureen Walsh had the winning score of 43pts. A little bit of local knowledge didn’t do any harm. The gents’ committee travelled to Belmullet and all agreed that an annual trip to Carne should always be pencilled in.
