The contract for the long-awaited relief road from McDonald’s roundabout in Castlebar to the Newport Road was signed at last night’s Castlebar Town Council meeting.
The total cost of the project is set at €4 million and the contract was awarded to Ward and Burke Contractors. When opened next summer the road is expected to seriously relieve traffic congestion in an area of the town that suffers badly, especially during the school term.
Mayor of Castlebar Councillor Michael Kilcoyne, who signed the contract documents along with the town manager Seamus Granahan, welcomed the news that works are at last to commence.
