Claremorris woman who forgot to get insurance escapes driving ban

A Claremorris woman who forgot to pay her insurance escaped a driving ban at Claremorris District Court this week. Mary Wolley, Castlemcgarrett, Claremorris pleaded guilty in court to the charges of having no insurance, and failure to produce insurance and her driving licence. The court was told by Garda Catherine Hoban that she spoke to Wolley at the scene of an accident on the Cloonfad Road, Claremorris on February 28 2009 and demanded the production of her driving licence and insurance within 10 days, which she failed to do.

Mrs Wolley told the court that she had insurance which ran out the previous year, which she forgot to renew as it was around the time of the birth of her third child. She said it was a complete oversight and there was nothing malicious in it. The first time that she remembered that she had no insurance was on the day of the accident. The court was also told that Wolley and her husband compensated the other party with a new van following the accident and that they had given him €100 in the way of compensation and another €500 at a later date when he came looking for more money.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined Wolley €400 for having no insurance and took the failure to produce charge into consideration.
