A UK citizen who told Claremorris District Court that the only reason he was driving was so he could bring injections that his father left in his house back to him was banned from driving and given a number of fines in Claremorris District Court this week.
Azmat Khan, 10 Greencourt, Ballyhaunis was stopped by Garda Ciaran McGrath at The Square, Claremorris on March 15 2009. Garda McGrath demanded production of his driving licence and insurance within 10 days, and also summonsed him for having a child unrestrained in the back of the car and for having no NCT on the car. Khan told the court that he doesn’t drive and that the only reason he was driving that day was that his parents had been to visit and that his father left his injections he needed in the fridge in his house and he was unable to come back and get them himself because he wasn’t feeling well. So the defendant took a car he was trying to sell to give these injections to his father.
Judge Mary Devins asked Khan: “Do you really expect me to believe that?” before convicting and fining him €500 for driving without insurance, €150 for failing to produce insurance, €150 for having no driving licence, €170 for having no NCT, €200 for having a child unrestrained in the back of the car, and she disqualified him from driving for one year concurrent with the previous ban imposed.
