Deere calls for footpath repairs at Davitt’s Terrace

Castlebar Town Councillor Ger Deere has called on Mayo County Council to repair the footpaths at Davitt’s Terrace and the surrounding areas of the Sacred Heart Hospital as part of their ongoing works on Newline Street. The footpaths between Newline Street and the Sacred Heart have fallen into disrepair and are completely unsuitable considering the number of elderly and infirm people using the route. Many elderly people walk to the Sacred Heart visiting friends or receiving treatments.

Cllr Deere said: “The works that are taking place on Newline at the moment should be extended to include the short stretch of footpath that extends to the Sacred Heart Home. The footpath as it stands is completely unsuitable. I am aware of one elderly person using an electronic wheelchair that turned over while travelling on the stretch of footpath. As the road is the responsibility of Mayo County Council and not Castlebar Town Council, I urge them to make every effort to have this footpath repaired to a satisfactory standard, and it should not be beyond reason considering the existing improvement works taking place in the area.”
