Balla
In last weekend’s strokeplay competition sponsored by The Sheebeen, Balla the ladies’ section was won by Bernie Bourke with a 52, Kathleen Minogue came second with a 53 (back nine ), and Geraldine Kilgallon finished thrid. Stephen Walsh Sr won the gents’ section with a 54 off the back nine, Padraig Joyce came second also with a 54 and Seamus Holian came third with a 55. The gross prize was won by Pat Jordan with a score of 60, Simon Smyth won the youths. A presentation of prizes for Butler Foods, Hurst Heating & Plumbing and the Sheebeen competitions will be held in the Sheebeen, Balla, on Saturday night October 17. Next week’s competition is stableford and is sponsored by Mulroy’s Londis Supermarkets, Castlebar.
In the men’s section of the Golfer of the Year, Pat Jordan has 52 points, Billy Gallagher is second with 25 points and Noel Hoban is in third with 18 points. In the ladies’ section, things are a bit tighter – Nora Heraty is in first with 45 points, Marie Flanagan is in second with 40 points and Mary Brett is in third with 37 points.
Ballyhaunis
In last weekend’s Harmac Medical Products competition Kung Fanning was the winner on the ladies’ side of things with a score of 71 nett, she was followed home by Anne Freeley who hit a 73 net and Phil Glynn with a 77 net in third. The gross prize was won by Marge Hierons who shot a 91 gross. Gavin Potgeiter won the men’s competition with a score of 66 net, with Michael Philips taking second place also on 66, with Karl Coyne coming third with a 67. The gross prize was won by John Jordan with a 76.
Claremorris
Claremorris Golf club has started a seniors’ competition at the club to be played each Wednesday. Good crowds are turning out for the competition. The following are the results to date: Wednesday September 30: 1st John Grant, Balla Road, 2nd James Prendergast. The following are the results of the competition played on October 7: 1st Tadg Mullen, 2nd Austin Garvin. The competition will continue throughout the remainder of the season and until further notice.
Last weekend’s competition was won by Matt O’Donovan, who scored 44pts, Barry Healey won the Cat 1 section with 40pts, Frank Costello won the Cat 2 with 41pts and Padraig Long won the Cat 3 with 38pts. Margaret Flannery won the ladies’ competition with 41 pts, Claire Prenty came second with 42 pts and Marie Healy came third with 37 pts.
Westport
Details were announced last week of the Bank Holiday competitions that are scheduled to take place at Westport from Friday October 23 to Monday October 26. A daily ladies’ and gents’ open singles stableford will take place. Entry fee will be €20 for visitors (€50 for a three day ticket ).
The highlight of the weekend will be the fact that a European Tour Truck will be on site all weekend. The Foregolf experience allows golfers to see real ball flight results. While on board, the Foregolf Team will assess you and your clubs and offer solutions to your equipment problems. It will be possible to book the truck for a 30 minute session at an individual cost of €50. Go to www.foregolf.ie for further information. Two of the premier tournaments that the Foregolf team attended this year were the BMW at Wentworth and the British Open at Turnberry.
The next gents’ senior club competition will take place on Thursday October 29. The timesheet will be open from 11.am to 12.28pm. The gents’ winter league will begin on November 7. The format is the same as last year: teams of four, front nine and back nine on alternate Sundays, six rounds with the best four rounds to count and two scores to count on every hole. Entries are now open. The entry fee is €40 per person which must be prepaid. Individual entries will be taken. Next Sunday’s gents’ competition will be a team of 4 Am-Am format; two scores to count on every hole.
