Protester almost found in contempt of court

Prominent Shell to Sea protester Maura Harrington was almost found in contempt of court at a special sitting of Belmullet District Court this week.

During court proceedings, Harrington held up a sign which stated “appalling vista”, which referred to a judgment given by Lord Denning in 1980 during the trial of the Birmingham Six.

Judge David Anderson said to Harrington that he is well aware the views of Lord Denning and that “in 11 years in this job I have never held anyone in contempt of court and I am not starting with you Ms Harrington”, before Harrington removed the sign from court.
