A Ballina man who was before Ballina District Court on Tuesday, for Judge Mary Devins to consider a probation report before sentencing, was sentenced to 56 days in jail for a public order offence and for stealing drink from Lidl.
Judge Devins said that the probation report which was before her relating to Martin Lawrence, 156 Greenhills Estate, Ballina, was “not great”, as he had not complied with the probation services.
Lawrence told the court that he is not “as fond of the drink now” and the court heard that he has not come to Garda attention since the incidents which occurred in the summers of 2007 and 2008 — evidence of which was given at previous sittings.
Lawrence, who has no previous convictions, was convicted and fined €200 for criminal damage to two wing mirrors on cars on May 5 2007; compensation has already been paid to the two injured parties.
For being threatening, abusive, and insulting in a public place on June 18 2007 he was convicted and fined €200; for section six public order offence on September 8 2007 on Pearse Street, Ballina, Lawrence was convicted and fined €250 and sentenced to 28 days in prison. For the theft of a bottle of vodka from Lidl on May 4 2008, the defendant was convicted and fined €250 and sentenced to 28 days in prison consecutive. Remaining public order charges were taken into consideration. Recognisances were fixed.
