Driving ban for Ballina man

A 27-year-old man from Ballina, days after buying a van in order for him to set up his own business, was arrested for drink driving and for driving without insurance.

Superintendent Frank Walsh outlined to Ballina District Court that on May 31 2009 at 2.50am, Brendan O’Malley, 21 the Fairways, Ballina, was stopped driving his van by gardaí on Ardbuckle Row. O’Malley had no insurance displayed and he was arrested for driving while intoxicated, with a subsequent breath test showing 58mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

Solicitor Peter Loftus said that the defendant has since got rid of the van and has not driven.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined O’Malley €700 for the drink driving charge and disqualified him from driving for two years. For driving without insurance O’Malley was convicted and fined €300 and disqualified for one year concurrent.
