Top comic theatre at the Linenhall

The very wonderful Bruiser Theatre Company brings its sparkling new comedy The Government Inspector to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday October 1 at 8pm.

The brilliant Bruiser team (Candide, Oh What A Lovely War ) makes a return visit to the Linenhall with this cracking version of Gogol’s classic comic play. In a small country town, a penniless traveller finds himself mistaken for a top-ranking government official. Totally unprincipled, he plays along with the confusion, demolishing the town’s facade of respectability and revealing greed and hypocrisy on a scale that even he finds hard to stomach.

Witty, smart and wildly satirical, this timely and spirited Irish premiere of Bill Scott’s terrific adaptation is packed full of amazing characters, played with huge energy, slapstick and cracking comic timing by a six-strong cast, and guaranteed to surprise, amuse and delight. One of the most famous comedies in world theatre, Gogol's masterpiece has lost none of its bite.

Powerful new drama to take centre stage at the Linenhall

Galway’s own Decadent Theatre presents the compelling and powerful contemporary drama Country Music at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday October 7 at 8pm.

Country Music is a story of crime and redemption. Spanning more than 20 years, this is the life story of illiterate loser Jamie Carris, a troubled 18-year-old whose recklessness leaves him facing a tragic future after being sent to prison for murder. What made this young man a killer? How will he survive the harsh reality of prison life? Can he ever rebuild his life?

Unsentimental yet not unsympathetic, episodic moments offer insight into Jamie’s inarticulate character and motivations, in an intricately woven play by Simon Stephens. A new production directed by acclaimed director Andrew Flynn, starring Andy Kellegher, presented in association with Galway Arts Centre.

Critics Circle Award-winning company Independent Ballet Wales presents its enchanting version of Shakespeare's most magical play: Puck, Titania and Oberon, Bottom and his rude mechanicals, and two sets of lovers, all caught in a thrilling web of mistaken identity, confusion, comedy and magic in an Athenian forest over the course of one fateful night. Featuring Mendelssohn's haunting music, with expansive choreography by Artistic Director Darius James and critically acclaimed costumes by Yvonne Greenleaf, the result is a wonderfully colourful and entertaining classical ballet performance for all the family.
