Mayo TD Beverley Flynn says that to dismantle the family resource centres in Mayo would be to deprive the community of a valuable asset and a resource which could never be replaced.
Deputy Flynn said that the services delivered by the seven family resource centres, much of that on a voluntary basis, were crucial to community life across the county.
“When you consider that over 10,000 individuals and groups availed of the services of the family resource centres in Mayo during 2008, we get an indication of the importance of the service to people from every background,” she said. “A further major element of the work of the family centres is education and training. Over 600 people availed of courses under the aegis of family centres last year.
“In light of the current financial situation for many people, family resource centres are needed now more than ever. To diminish their role in any way would be a backward step,” Dep Flynn concluded.
