The Westport Sustainability Group has recently unveiled proposals to develop a linear orchard on waste land adjacent to the Railway Walk between Westport and Westport Quay. The group has proposed that up to 1,000 apple, plum, damson, and nut trees are planted among the existing vegetation, with priority being given to areas of low natural
biodiversity.
“The project has the potential to transform the Railway Walk, already an important amenity feature, into something quite exceptional,” said group spokesperson Andy Wilson. “The proposed two kilometre linear orchard along the Railway Walk would be unique in Ireland. In addition to providing a wonderful display of blossom in spring time, it will complement the existing wild harvests of blackberries and hazelnuts, and will provide an enduring natural resource for future generation to enjoy.”
The proposal for such development has been submitted to the town clerk and Mr Wilson hopes that they will have the opportunity to make a formal presentation to the town council later this year.
