Mayo Fine Gael Councillor Austin Francis O’Malley will chair the regional health forum west hospital committee for the coming year.
At a meeting at Merlin Park on Tuesday Cllr O’Malley was proposed for the position by his party colleague in Mayo Cllr Tom Connolly.
In accepting the position Cllr O’Malley said he would be “as fair and as frank” as possible during his year at the helm.
This is a prestigious post for the Louisburgh native who is serving his second term on the HSE Regional Forum, the main body of which is chaired by Galway Councillor Padraig Conneely.
The hospital committee is one of two sub committees of the regional forum which will meet four times in the coming year in locations from Donegal to Tipperary and Limerick.
The HSE west has 27,000 staff, has a budget of €2.8 billion, has 450 owned and 250 leased premises, covers an area of 10,660 miles and a population of one million.
