Letter led to litter conviction

A letter from the National Education Welfare Board which was found among illegally dumped litter, led to the conviction of a father of six from Ballina.

In December last year, litter warden Josephine Armstrong received a complaint about illegally dumped rubbish in Crosspatrick, Killala Road where three bags of rubbish were located. A letter addressed to Tommy Lawrence, 26 St Murdeach’s Terrace, Ballina was discovered.

Defending solicitor Peter Flynn said that the defendant takes responsibility for two bags, which were discarded by Lawrence’s teenage son who removed the bags from the back of their pick up truck after the defendant pulled into the side of the road to take a phone call.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined the defendant €250 and ordered that €250 be paid towards costs.
