Plea to save Neale housing development

A planning application for 14 houses at The Neale is in jeopardy because of the delay in delivering a sewerage treatment plant to the village.

Gerard Warde made the application to Mayo County Council to construct six four bedroom houses and eight three bedroom houses at Ballyshingadaun, The Neale, when he saw that works to the village’s sewerage scheme had begun.

However, Mayo County Council are now saying that the application is premature and while the sewerage network is being installed by the council themselves, the treatment plant will be constructed under a design, build and operate contract which means the job will be put out to tender. However, due to the economic situation there have been cutbacks in DBO funding, the director of services Seamus Granahan told a meeting of the Claremorris electoral area committee. The expected date for the treatment plant to be delivered is 2012.

During the meeting local councillors made a plea to the council to engage in negotiations with the developer to allow his development go ahead by providing some kind of an interim solution.

It also came to light that the Cross sewerage scheme was in the same difficultly.

An extension of time has been granted to the applicant.
