The Irish Heart Foundation is calling for as many people as possible to join Ireland’s Big Walk on World Heart Day on September 27.
This is the biggest walking event in the country attracting up to 15,000 people on the day. According to the national heart health charity, regular walking is fun, social and a great form of exercise for a healthy heart. Not to mention – it’s free!
To help the Irish Heart Foundation make this year’s event bigger and better, the charity is looking for volunteers and walking leaders to organise walks in their area and for everyone else to take part. Health promotion manager at the Irish Heart Foundation, Maureen Mulvihill said: “Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Ireland and regular physical activity, such as walking at a moderate intensity for at least 30 minutes, five days a week, will help reduce your risk of heart attack by half and the risk of stroke by a quarter.
Another option is to take up the Irish Heart Week Four Week Walk or Step Challenge, starting on Monday September 21. For more information or to register online go to www.irishheart.ie
