IWAK enjoys busiest day in airport’s history

Last Friday, August 28, proved to be the busiest day in the history of Ireland West Airport Knock.

Almost 4,500 travellers defied the recession and flew either to or from the airport.

August was also the busiest month in the airport in three years with a total of 81,000 passengers travelling through the airport, reflecting the preference of passengers to use their regional airport.

Since 2007 passenger numbers through the airport have grown by 13 per cent.

Commenting on the positive news in what is a very difficult time for the aviation industry, Joe Gilmore, managing director or Ireland West Airport Knock, said: “Ireland West Knock are delighted to announce that August 2009 was our busiest month in three years and the second busiest month ever in the history of the airport. With so much economic uncertainty it was refreshing to see our new terminal full of thousands of people choosing Ireland West Airport Knock as their preferred airport of choice to travel through.

“On behalf of the airport and its staff I would like to thank the thousands of people who have used our airport this year for this huge vote of confidence.”

The airport’s success in gaining market share in Ireland is linked to the fact that more and more people from counties in the wider catchment areas of Westmeath, Longford, Offaly, and Cavan are choosing the comfort, convenience, and value for money offering of Ireland West Airport Knock over other more congested, difficult to access, and high cost airports.
