Workers with medical cards exempt from income levy

Workers with medical cards are being reminded that they are exempt from the income levy which was introduced in last year’s budget.

The advice has come from the Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny who said this exemption has not been widely publicised.

Deputy Kenny said: “The issue of the income levy has been discussed with me by some constituents who are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet. This type of levy is one of the most blunt instruments that can be used in any economy. It makes little distinction between those that can’t afford further erosion of income. Any person concerned should inform their employers. They merely need to supply them with evidence of being a medical card holder and can cease having deductions from their salary. The most notable element here is that the person is entitled to a full and immediate refund of any payments made since the start of January 2009. This may provide a much needed boost in the back to school season and in advance of the Christmas period.”
