Mayo riders perform well in Mullingar

Two of Mayo's up and coming young riders were in action in Mullingar last week at the National Championship and riders from the west of Ireland performed superbly in tough conditions.

Claremorris duo Shane Goggins and Eric Glynn helped Connacht to an incredible clean sweep of the major young rider titles at the show with victories in the 1.10 and 1.20 metre classes, while Galway's Michael Duffy took the 1.30 metre title with Goggins crowning a superb weekend with second in that category as well.

Eric Glynn won the young rider title in the province's Grand Prix league earlier this month and his riproaring season continued at the midlands venue with the 1.20 metre victory on Frank Glynn's Illy De Quincy. Incredibly Goggins managed another second here on Cruise Allere before pushing Duffy all the way in the 1.30 class. Both riders are very much on the up and next season will hopefully see more such progress.

Team success in Horses and Ponies

Connacht’s greatest success of the weekend came in the pony section where the 148cm grade team won the Gurteen Team Competition, beating off stiff competition from the leading pony riders from the other three provinces on Saturday. The weather for that event was slightly better than that which greeted the riders on Sunday and the Connacht team jumped superbly, moving from fourth and last in round one to top the pile in round two.
