Irish language drama in the the Linenhall
Aisteoirí Chorr na Móna presents As Béal a Chéile, an evening of new Irish-language theatre, at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Friday September 26 at 8pm. As Béal a Chéile comprises two newly written comedies in verse and traditional verse-dialogues on topical issues by Mícheál Ó Tuairisg. The emphasis is on the skilful use of witty rhymes and rhythms. Both plays present a new twist on classic themes - “the man who pretends to be dead” and the story of the miser - based on a play written by Plautus in 200BC. Presented by An Comhlachas Náisiúnta Drámaíochta.

Darragh O’Neill set for classical guitar gig
Award-winning guitarist/composer Darragh O'Neill presents an evening of wonderful music for guitar spanning centuries and cultures at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday September 25 at 8pm.
Darragh O’Neill's wonderful musicianship spellbinds with music of Bach and the baroque classics along with some of Darragh's own compositions and the programme also includes music from Japan, Latin America and Ireland. Dublin-born Darragh O'Neill has collaborated in the past with such international artists as Michael Ball, Russell Watson and Vanessa Amorossi with appearances on The Late Late Show and at Dublin's Point Depot. Darragh’s 2009 concert calendar for 2009 includes performances at the National Concert Hall, Dublin and at Carnegie Hall, New York. Top US Cajun band at the Linenhall
The Pine Leaf Boys, one of the very finest new Cajun/zydeco bands, performs at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Monday September 29 at 8pm.
Making waves of tsunami-like proportions in the States as the Next Big Thing on the Cajun scene, the Grammy-nominated Pine Leaf Boys have made a name for presenting their own inimitable brand of Cajun music with youthful exuberance. Hailing from the southwest Louisiana and known for their wild shows and thoughtful arrangements, the Pine Leaf Boys breathe new life into Cajun music, reviving ancient songs and bringing them to the bandstand. Their mission is to present the awesome music of their ancestors and celebrate the real pure joys of authentic Cajun music at its very, very finest. And do they succeed!

Female artists exhibition runs until end of the month
There is a wonderful opportunity to see the work of some of the best known names in Irish art in the exhibition Female Artists of the Twentieth Century from the Niland Collection currently on show at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar. This exhibition, which is drawn from the Niland Collection, celebrates the work of female Irish artists from the 20th century. The Niland collection features a large amount of work by female artists, and looked at together these works provide a comprehensive survey of the changing themes and practices of women artists throughout the century, with work by leading Irish artists including Mainie Jellet, Evie Hone, Mary Swanzy, Norah McGuinness, Nano Reid, Dorothy Cross, Kathy Prendergast and Alice Maher. This exhibition has been curated by Emer McGarry and organised in collaboration with the Model Arts and Niland Gallery, Sligo. The exhibition runs until Saturday September 27.
Lunchtime art talk
On Wednesday September 24 at 1pm, Ann O’Mahony will present “Reading Women’s Art: A Web of Multiple Meanings”, a fascinating lunchtime talk on art created by women artists presented in conjunction with the current Linenhall exhibition, Female Artists of the Twentieth Century from the Niland Collection. Ann is currently engaged in research for a D Phil Thesis in Art History and Critical Theory at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. Admission is free, and all are welcome. Calling all over 65s who like to dance
The Linenhall Arts Centre is exploring the possibility of running a series of dance workshops for over 65-year-olds in spring 2009. In order to ensure that these workshops meet your needs/wishes we would now like to hear from you. What sort of dance would you like us to focus on: old-time waltzes; ballroom dance; swing; salsa; set dancing; sean nós dance; or any other suggestionsr? What length workshop would suit you?
