Unique remembrance concert at the Royal Theatre

Mayo Remembrance Concert is a unique event which will take place in the Royal Castlebar Theatre and Event Centre on Monday, October 6. This special concert is being held in honour of all those from County Mayo who served and died in both world wars and in the many conflicts of the past century in the cause of world peace. The fallen will be permanently commemorated in the Mayo Peace Park Garden of Remembrance which will be officially opened on the following day by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese.

The show features some of the leading choirs of County Mayo-the Cill Aodain Choir, the Moy Singers, the Mayo Male Voice Choir and Castlebar Parish Choir – as well as two international choirs-the Singgemeinschaft Wachenroth from Hochstadt, Germany and the Irish Guards Choir from Liverpool. They will be singing songs of hope and inspiration and a number of very popular numbers of their own choosing. The Mayo Concert Orchestra, under the direction of George Lee, will provide musical entertainment for the occasion. It will also feature the leading internationally famous Mayo tenor Sean Costello from Ballinrobe and the equally famous and popular soprano Francie McNicholas from Swinford.

The military band the Drums and Pipes of the Irish Guards Regiment from London will also take part in the event. This is a once-off occasion not to be missed. There will also be short readings, poems, community singing and military band participation. The co-ordinating committee is made up of Michael Feeney, Eamon Horkan, John Basquille, Stephen McLaughlin, Henry Moroney, Ernie Sweeney, Basil Burke, Michael Armstrong, Mona Dempsey, Lenore Dempsey and Mary Dempsey. The Stage Manager is Michael Brett and John Gibbons will be in charge of sound. Master of Ceremonies for the night will be Tommy Marren. The voluntary community Mayo Peace Park committee charged with promoting the concert are urging everyone to come out and enjoy what will be a fantastic collection of some of the best singers, bands and musicians ever assembled on a stage.

Tickets can be booked through www.royal.ie, www.ticketmaster.ie, any ticketmaster outlet nationwide or, for the price of a local call, the box office of the Royal Theatre Castlebar at 0818 300000; this number is operational 24/7.
