Westport Film Club

The first screening this season from the Westport Film Club will be The Private Lives of Pippa Lee on Wednesday September 2 at 8.30pm in the Westport Cineplex.

Annual Covie Walk

Who lived along the North Mall in Westport over the years? Who were the characters and what are the stories associated with this part of Westport town? Find out at The Annual Covie Walk on Monday September 7.

Covies of all hues are welcome to gather outside the Old Railway Hotel on the Mall at 7.30pm to hear stories from the past told by people who live or lived on the Mall. The evening will be imbued with poetry and song, as is befitting any Covie gathering. The walk will last just over an hour and all will adjourn to John O’Grady’s on the Mall.

Castlebar Chamber host seminar

The Castlebar Chamber of Commerce is hosting a free employment law and health and safety seminar in conjunction with Peninsula Business Services on Wednesday September 2 in The Welcome Inn at 6.15pm.

Sunday evening concert in Castlebar

An acclaimed 17-piece group, who have entertained the attendance at the last three Catholic World Youth Day Celebrations, bring their unique brand of hip-hop, rock, pop, drama, and dance to Castlebar. Internationally-renowned Rexband will deliver “an energetic evening of entertainment for any age-group” when they perform at the TF Royal Theatre on Sunday, August 30 at 5pm.

“We firmly believe that this concert will be a special event for many to discover the love of Jesus through contemporary music,” said a spokesperson for event organisers, Our Lady’s School of Evangelisation, Knock. Westport Civic Trust

The Westport Civic Trust would like to thank all those children who took part in the competition on Heritage Day, finding the Irish sayings that had been displayed in premises around the town. The Trust would like to thank all those who made the day, and their stall, such a success.

Jackie Clarke collection

As part of the National Heritage Week there will be free admission to the Jackie Clarke Library and Archives in the library, Pearse Street, Ballina, on August 30 from 1pm to 5pm. The collection hosts 100,000 items covering 400 years of Irish history.

Host a coffee morning

The Hospice community has launched a special appeal to the public to support Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning, sponsored by Bewley’s, on Thursday September 17 in order to raise €2.5 million.

People in workplaces, homes, and local organisations across Ireland are being asked to hold a coffee morning and to collect €2 for each cup of Bewley’s fresh ground coffee consumed. All money raised locally stays locally and goes directly back to fund local Hospice care services. Anyone can host a coffee morning and Bewley’s provides the fresh ground coffee free of charge. Registration advice and details on how to get your special complimentary Bewley’s fresh ground coffee pack can be obtained by contacting your local hospice group or by calling the Irish Hospice Foundation on 01 679 3188.

 

GAA fundraising draw

Tickets are now on sale for the Parke/Kellogues/Crimlin GAA fundraising draw which will take place next month.

First prize is €500; second: a hamper to the value of €300; third: €150; fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth prize is €100 per prize; ninth prize is a bottle of brandy, and 10th prize is a bottle of whiskey.

The draw will take place in Stack’s Bar, Castlebar, on Friday September 25 at 10pm. Tickets which are €10 can be purchased from club members.

Donate a toy for charity

An inspirational campaign has been launched which aims to galvanise local and national support for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin, Dublin. The Merlin Toy Auction (www.merlintoyauction.ie ) is a two-tier event, taking place on Tuesday, October 13 at the Merlin auction house on Kylemore Road, Dublin, where bidders can get their hands on celebrity toys, along with an autographed certificate of authenticity. Children around the country are also asked to donate a toy of any size, shape, or model, once they’re in good working condition; the best of which will be entered into the auction, and any toys not sold will go towards the Vincent De Paul Christmas campaign.

Toys can be sent to Merlin Car Auctions, Naas, Co Kildare, or Merlin Car Auctions, Kylemore Road, Dublin 12. All senders will receive a very special certificate.
