Rain causes havoc with Captain’s Day
The Captain’s Day at Balla Golf Club had to be cancelled due to the torrential rain. However, the ladies and the juniors played on Saturday; Tommy Padden, Sam Forde, and Daniel Foy were the winners of the junior scramble. Second place went to the pair of James Wilson and Conor Holian. The trio of Paul Cunnane, Kelan McDonnell, and Tommy Keane took third place. The ladies’ competition was won by Bernie Burke, with Mary B Prendergast not far behind in second place, Marie Flanagan took third place and Carmel Costello the gross prize. The lady beginner competition was won by Breege Heraty and Caroline Gilmartin took second.

Scratch cups at Claremorris
Claremorris Golf Club will host three scratch cups on Saturday, August 29. The John Keane scratch cup will cater for handicaps of zero to four, the TSB Irish Permanent scratch cup is for handicaps of five to nine, and the intermediate scratch for the Fr Eddie Griffith cup is for golfer of 10 and upwards. Green and red society
It’s Captain’s prize day for the Green and red golfing society this weekend, tomorrow (August 29 ) the stars of the society will be competing for captain Gerry Connor’s prize in Ballina Golf Club. Things will get under way between 10am and 12pm, with a society competition, a visitors’ section, and local club members section also taking place. Westport Golf Club
Although rain stopped play at Westport Golf Club on Sunday last, what is quickly becoming the local golfing story of the year took another twist last weekend. Two of the Carrowholly golfing dynasties, the Gibbons and the Newtons, faced each other in the semi-final of the Murtagh Foursomes.
Austin and Damien Gibbons started the game in similar fashion to Usain Bolt and were five up after six. With some steady play however and a great comeback, the match reached the sudden death stage. Joe Hastings, who has had a magnificent summer of golf, was delighted to look on as his grand-father David Newton with some solid putting on the 19th and 20th closed out the match and the favourites now await their opponents of this very popular club competition.
Congratulations to Liam Walsh from Newport who won the major senior competition of the year, the Liam Walsh Perpetual Trophy on Friday last. Making his senior debut in the competition was Liam Gibbons who also featured in the prizes. Sunday’s competitions are the Ladies’ Medal Stroke (Mary Cadden ) and the gents have a GOY sponsored by Gar Golden. With the senior amateur home internationals only as matter of weeks away and being hosted at Westport, excitement grew following last week’s European senior team competition. Defending European champions Ireland came up short and were knocked out at the semi-final stage. However the new European senior team champions England will tee it up in Westport on Monday September 28.
