€3.6 million investment at IWAK for landing systems and runway upgrade

Ireland West Airport Knock has this week announced the implementation of a CAT II ILS (instrument landing system ) — which has been in operation in the airport since April — along with a major upgrade of Runway 27. These two major projects represented a €3.6 million investment to complete.

The major benefit of the utilisation of CAT II ILS, is to greatly improve daily operations and reliability of services in and out of Ireland West Airport Knock as the technology aids aircraft landing in poor visibility which has in the past led to planes being diverted to other airports.

As for works on the runway, the existing runway end safety area has been extended and the turning circle for the aircraft has also been increased.

Commenting on the key benefits that CAT II ILS will bring to the airport, Joe Gilmore, managing director, Ireland West Airport Knock said: “This new system will greatly aid the airport in its plan to add new services to the UK and Europe for the people of the west, northwest and midlands regions of Ireland”
