Minister Dara Calleary has issued a ‘Come to Killala’ appeal ahead of this weekend’s annual festival in the popular north Mayo seaside town.
The festival takes place from Friday through to Sunday with a fun-filled programme of events for young and old.
“Killala Festival committee always come up trumps when it comes to putting on an action-packed programme of events and from a quick glance at this year’s brochure it is obvious that a lot of hard work and toil has gone into making the 2009 festival the biggest and best yet. From family entertainment and street busking on Friday evening to the children’s day on Saturday, complete with bouncy castles, face-painting, and falcon display, right through to the culmination of the festival with a fireworks display on Sunday night this is going to be a weekend to remember in Killala,” advised the Minister for Labour Affairs.
The highlight of the weekend is the Heritage Day that takes place on Sunday. “Steeped in history, Killala is in many ways the ideal location for a stroll down memory lane and I know that the festival committee have put together a very impressive programme of events for the day when Killala will be transformed to a bygone era.
“I know that among the major attractions are a thrashing display, weavers, butter-makers, wood-turners, straw-hat makers, honey-makers, boxty makers, and farmers’ market stalls. There will also be an extensive display of vintage machinery including cars, tractors, and farm equipment.
“To think that all this entertainment is free of charge is quite remarkable and is a great credit to the festival committee, sponsors, and wider Killala community. I advise anyone looking for somewhere to visit or something to do this weekend to take a trip to Killala,” said Minister Calleary.
Killala Festival runs from Friday August 21 to Sunday August 23.
