€71,000 designated for development of Ballina walking trail

Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary has confirmed that €71,190 has been allocated by the Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism, Martin Cullen TD, for the development of a historic trail in Ballina.

The funding is part of a national allocation of €2.2 million for the development of historic town projects in 35 towns around the country.

Deputy Calleary welcomed the funding, saying: “This funding has been allocated under Fáilte Ireland’s Historic Towns Initiative and will be entrusted to Mayo County Council for the development of a historic walking trail in Ballina. Costs incurred may include signage, interpretive boards along the trail which will take in some of Ballina’s historical landmarks. This will add to the walking trail already developed by the Ballina Tidy Towns Committee and Ballina Town Council.

“North Mayo is perfectly positioned as a tourist destination, with the Moy and so many other natural amenities on our doorstep. The development of this type of trail is a positive step towards the development of our tourist product in Ballina town itself,” he concluded.

The Historic Towns Initiative forms part of the Tourism Product Development and Infrastructure sub-programme of the National Development Plan. Under this announcement €39,680 was also allocated to Westport.
