Ballina pub served drink on a Sunday morning

A summons was issued against the licensee of Peacock’s Bar, Ballina to appear in Ballina District Court this week, after a number of customers were found on its premises on a Sunday morning in March.

Garda Michael Flaherty entered the licensed premises on O’Rahilly Street at 11.10am on March 9 this year where he observed six persons on the premises consuming alcohol, even though 12.30pm was the opening time. Gda Flaherty met Noel Ward who explained that the licensee, Ann Ward, was away that weekend.

The court heard that Ward was 20 years in business and that this was her second such offence.

Judge Patrick Clyne said that with the annual licensing being up for scrutiny soon it would not be favourable to register an endorsement and said that the defendant should instead “plough some profits back into the community”. Ward was ordered to pay €750 to Hope House.
