The funny men and woman of Fawlty Towers turned the Royal Theatre Castlebar upside down when a large group of up to 300 local people arrived for dinner.
Manic and hilarious are just two words which describe this dining experience which saw Basil Fawlty, his domineering wife Sybil, and the challenged waiter Manuel scurrying around trying to meet the demands of the hungry diners.
Castlebar Chamber of Commerce, in association with the Royal Theatre, brought this amazing show to Castlebar. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. People were left waiting for their soup, their bread rolls were flung at them, orders were mixed up, and this was all done in good humour and true Fawlty Towers style.
At one stage even a rodent went missing among the diners as the witty trio acted out some of the best scenes from the ever popular Fawlty Towers television show.
For dessert, diners were treated to a cookery display from celebrity chef Oliver Kelleher who prepared Kelleher's Flambé Boxty to an eager audience.
It was a night filled of fun, laughter and money-making opportunities — quite appropriate given that it was well supported by the local business community and their friends and the Chamber would like to thank all those who bought tickets, sponsored spot prizes, and bought horses or races in the very successful race night.
From the champagne reception on arrival right through to the highly competitive race night, it was an evening to remember.
This was the first such night when the Chamber of Commerce and the Royal Theatre joined forces in creating awareness of an exciting initiative which hopes to increase tourism to the town under the Destination Castlebar marketing drive. This initiative hopes to increase awareness of Castlebar as an entertainment and shopping destination. The Destination Castlebar logo will be launched shortly before a major marketing drive is undertaken to highlight nationally what Castlebar has to offer to tourists.
