Man arrested for disturbance in garda station

A Lithuanian who was arrested for public order offences in a garda station was warned by Judge Mary Devins at Castlebar District Court this week that he would face a jail sentence if he partakes in such behaviour in the future.

Aurelijus Lubauskas, 13 Tara Court, Saleen, Castlebar was arrested in the public foyer of Castlebar Garda Staion for public order offences. According to Garda Brain Guerin, the defendant was in the station as he was enquiring about his friend who had been arrested. Gda Guerin—who had previously spoken to the defendant on Spencer Street and asked him to go home—said that Lubauskas was intoxicated and refused to leave the garda station and began shouting. The defendant was arrested at 5.35pm.

Lubauskas, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty in court and represented himself. He has been in Ireland for two years and works as a general operative in a factory. His employer Mr Seamus Joyce appeared in court and said that the defendant was “courteous, helpful and a good worker.”

Judge Devins asked the defendant if he understood that he could go to prison for nine months for these public order offences. The judge convicted and fined Lubauskas €500 for section six public order offences and bound the defendant to the peace for 12 months, warning him that “if you do this again you will be going to an Irish jail.” The two other public order charges—section four and section eight—were taken into consideration and the defendant was asked to apologise to the garda in court.
