L driver disqualified for six months

A learner driver who did not display his L plates was disqualified from driving for six months at Ballina District Court this week.

Garda Rebecca Fearon stopped a Honda Civic being driven by Alan Doherty, Lansyn, Bohernasup, Ballina at 2.32pm on February 25 this year on Station Road.

Doherty, produced a provisional licence and had no L plates displayed. The court heard that the defendant had a previous road traffic offence for driving while unaccompanied in 2005—Judge Mary Devins asked if Doherty was “taking the scenic route” to getting his driving test.

Michael Bohan, solicitor for the defendant, said that the 25-year-old man was driving someone else’s car on the day when he was stopped, therefore no L plates were displayed.

Judge Devins convicted and fined the defendant €170 and disqualified him from driving for six months. Recognisances were fixed.
