Fine Gael Councillor John O’Malley, a farmer by profession from Carrowholly, has been elected as the new chairperson of the Westport electoral area committee.
Cllr O’Malley was proposed for the position by Cathaoirleach of Westport Cllr Myles Staunton at their bi- monthly meeting on Tuesday. In putting Cllr O’Malley forward for the position, Cllr Staunton said he has served the area extremely well,and is a hard worker which was illustrated by the high vote he got in the local elections.
In seconding the proposal, Cllr Peter Flynn said there was going to be a difficult few years ahead which will need strong leadership.
The outgoing Chairperson, Cllr Austin Francis O’Malley, thanked the director of services Mr Peter Hynes for his help and co-operation in the past. Mr Hynes thanked Cllr O’Malley for his co-operation and remembered Frank Chambers who retired from politics after 27 years of extensive public service
