Three months jail for woman with 40 convictions in nine years

A Castlebar woman who according to Judge Mary Devins had skated along society for too long, while picking up a number of previous convictions was given a three month prison sentence at Castlebar District Court this week.

Roseanna Sweeney with an address of 5 Meadow Park, Castlebar was granted a request that the warrant for her imprisonment would not execute until 12pm on July 22 so she could make arrangements for the care of her three children.

Sweeney pleaded guilty to a number of offences on a number of dates in court. Superintendent Willie Keavney told the court that on December 1 2008, Sweeney was arrested for making gain and causing loss by deception in Shaws Department store after she tried to purchase items on which she had changed the price in the shop. She also pleaded guilty to having no motor tax and a bald tyre on December 2 2008, and to a speeding offence she was detected for on February 17 2009.

The court was told that Sweeney had amassed upwards of 40 convictions in the space of nine years. Judge Devins convicted and fined her €500 for the theft on December 1 and sentenced her to three months in prison. For having no tax on December 2 she convicted and fined her €250, and convicted and fined her €50 for the bald tyre. For the speeding offence on February 17 she convicted and fined her €200.
