The Westport town councillors were informed by the town architect, Simon Wall, about proposed environmental improvement works to Mill Street and Upper Fairgreen at their monthly meeting last week.
The proposals, which were on public display, received six submissions, with the main concerns being in relation to the location and planting of trees, the need for a hard stand to facilitate a hearse outside Navin’s, the locations of raised pedestrian crossings and the locations of loading bays.
Mr Wall explained that these issues have been addressed by omitting three trees from the scheme and relocating others, the outside of the funeral home has been redesigned to accommodate a hearse and standing room. As for the pedestrian crossing near Mill Street car park this will be converted from a raised crossing to a flush crossing to facilitate sprint finishes for cycle races (with a recommendation for a review in eight weeks time ). There will be no loading bays on the street, with all deliveries to go to the Mill Street/High Street car park.
Cllr Margaret Adams suggested that removable ramps should be put in place to facilitate both cycle races and residents concerns about speeding along the street.
