A rarely seen 19th century painting of Westport was this week put on display at Westport House.
The painting by Andrew Nicholl RHA (1804 – 1886 ) was purchased by Westport House at the recent Glin Castle Christie’s sale in London.
It was originally hung in Glin Castle, Co Limerick until Desmond Fitzgerald, 29th Knight of Glin, put his large collection of pictures and furniture up for sale in May.
The painting is a panoramic view of Westport town and Clew bay – including Westport House, Croagh Patrick, and Clare Island - from the Castlebar road.
It is considered an outstanding example of the artist’s later work and gives visitors a unique insight into how Westport looked in the 19th century.
