The people of Mayo are asked to test themselves in aid of Irish charities Fighting Blindness and the Diabetes Federation of Ireland by taking part in the Transylvania Trek 2010.
The trek, from May 25 to 30 next year, promises anyone who takes part an unforgettable experience in a hidden corner of Europe almost unchanged for 850 years. This unique adventure, which involves a sponsored trek of some 70kms over four days, will give trekkers the chance to take in the majestic Bucegi Mountains, overlooking Transylvania, at a perfect time of year while the snow is melting and the region’s famed wild flowers are in bloom. It is also a perfect opportunity to visit Count Vlad or Dracula's castle and experience some of the delights of Romania’s beautiful capital Bucharest. And even though it is Dracula country, participants need not be too scared of the challenge as the Transylvania Trek is rated as moderate, meaning an average level of fitness is required to walk the route.
