School’s out, sun and fun begins

As the Leaving Certificate exams come to an end and thousands of Irish students get ready to leave the books behind, pack their bags, and head off for their much anticipated holiday, drinkaware.ie and the ITAA is issuing a reminder to students of the dangers of mixing sun and alcohol.

“In the excitement of being away on holiday with friends and celebrating the end of exams, it is easy to forget about the possible effects a cocktail of sun and alcohol can have on you,” commented drinkaware.ie chief executive, Fionnuala Sheehan.

Some hints and tips:

Alcohol dehydrates you, and the heat of the sun makes it worse. Take regular breaks and drink at least a litre of water a day.

Avoid risky situations, especially after a few drinks, like walking along a deserted cliff path at 2am.

Choosing not to drink is a personal decision. Don’t put pressure on non-drinking friends to drink and respect their decision.

Mixing drink with sports, from volleyball to rock climbing, can lead to injuries. So play it safe. Likewise, midnight swimming and drinking is never advisable.

Listen to the travel company’s reps in the resort — they want you to have a great time but will point out risks you should avoid.

Bars abroad often serve larger measures of spirits than Irish pubs so just two vodkaws could be the same as four or five at home.

When you're relaxing on the beach, or at a barbecue, lather on the sun lotion. A combination of a hangover and sunburn is enough to spoil anyone's holiday.

In some countries, alcohol is restricted or banned. Consult your guidebook or travel agent before you go, and respect local attitudes. Apart from being common courtesy, ignoring advice can lead to serious punishment.

When waiting for your flight at the airport don't drink to excess as you may not be allowed to travel.

Many insurance companies won't pay up if you have an accident after drinking alcohol.

It is important to check drink drive limits when abroad as they may be lower than in Ireland. Most of Europe has a BAC limit of 50mg — that is 30mg lower than in Ireland. In the US it is illegal to have any alcohol in your blood if you're under 21 and driving. Don't risk spending your holiday behind bars.
