The Mayo GAA Senior Football League's have reached the last eight stages after last weekend's conclusion of the group stages of the various divisions confirmed the quarter finalist and relegation final places.
With championship action still a number of weeks away, the clubs who have made it to the knock-out stages of the leagues will be using the up coming games to further fine tune their game plans, while also having a crack at winning some silverware for the season. With the league divisions split into A and B sections it will be the first time this season a lot of sides will have come across each when the action takes place this weekend.
In Division One there are two quarter-finals down for decision on Saturday evening with both games throwing in at 7pm. North Mayo heavy hitters Knockmore who topped Division 1A with five wins and two draws from their seven games will take on Ballinrobe in Knockmore. The south Mayo men finished in fourth place in Division 1B on six points thanks to two wins and two draws in the league stages.
Last year's Mayo GAA Senior Football Champions Westport will also be at home tomorrow evening where they will host Aghamore, Westport topped Division 1B winning all seven of their games where they finished the league stages with a points difference of +82. The East Mayo men came fourth in Division 1A winning four and drawing once during the league stages.
The action in Division One continues on Sunday, with a brace of games slated to get underway at 2pm with the meeting of Castlebar Mitchels and Ballina Stephenites an interesting looking encounter between the two most successful clubs in Mayo GAA history. The Mitchels will have home advantage for this one, finishing in second place in Division 1B where they won all but one of their games, their only loss coming against Westport, while Ballina Stephenites came third in Division 1A. The finished level on 10 points alongside Garrymore at the end of the seven regulation league games, but the south Mayo men got the higher placing in the table on the head-to-head rule thanks to their win over the north Mayo men earlier in the campaign.
The aforementioned Garrymore will be in action in the final Division One quarter-final where they will be at home to Ballintubber who finished in third place in Division 1B with four wins and three losses to their name so far this season. Along with places in the league semi-finals up for the taking this weekend, there are also battles to avoid relegation with two division one relegation play-off encounter taking place. Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin and Davitts who were both promoted out of division two will meet on Sunday in Parke at 2.30pm, with the defeated side heading back to the second tier of league football for next season and Mayo Gaels hosting Kiltimagh on Saturday at 7pm, with the same fate befalling the loser of the at encounter.
In Division Two there are also four semi-final spots up for grabs, as sides battle it out to make the final of the competition to gain promotion to Division One for next season. On Saturday evening at 7pm, Balla will host Hollymount-Carrmore, Islandeady will travel to Ballyhaunis and Bohola Moy Davitts will welcome Kilmeena. Then on Sunday the final quarter-final will be the meeting of Crossmolina and Belmullet in Tallagh at 12pm for what promises to be an epic north Mayo encounter. In the relegation play-offs The Neale will make their way to McGovern Park to face Burrishoole, while Kilmaine and Killala will will square off in Kilmaine at a date and time to be yet decided.
The action is also heating up in Division Three with three quarter-finals taking place on Saturday evening at 7pm with Achill travelling to Ardnaree, Swinford at home to Castlebar Mitchels B and Ardagh travelling to Shrule-Glencorrib. On Sunday there will be a local derby with Knockmore B hosting Lahardane at 2pm. There is just one relegation play-off in this division with Breaffy B taking on Ballycastle in Crossmolina at 7pm on Saturday evening.
