Mayo Dark Skies is National Lottery Finalist

Mayo Dark Skies has been announced as a National Finalist in the National Lottery Good Causes Awards 2023. The community-based group works to reduce light pollution, preserve and restore dark skies over Mayo, through education, raising awareness and events promoting positive lighting practices and supporting environmental goals. Their latest project focused on creating a Lighting Master Plan for the town of Newport, which has reduced light pollution in the town and redesigned how heritage and architectural buildings should be lit at night to reduce harsh glares and ecological light pollution. The National Lottery Good Causes Awards honour the inspiring work and achievements of projects that positively impact on local communities. Nearly 30 cent in every €1 spent on National Lottery games goes back to Good Causes all over the country.

Hospital consultant to climb Mweelrea in fundraiser

A hospital consultant aims to climb the highest peak in every county in Ireland in one week in memory of his late sister-in-law and plans to sweep into Mayo on day two - to scale Mweelrea, Connaught's highest peak. Cork-based consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Richard Horgan, is training intensely for next month’s mammoth challenge, five years after the tragic death of his wife’s youngest sister, Orla Gosnell, 38. The funds he raises for Cork University Maternity Hospital through CUH Charity will be used to create dedicated spaces for patients and staff – and a permanent reminder of the social care worker’s life. Orla died in December 2018, five months after delivering her fifth child at CUMH. Richard’s ‘32 County Peaks in a Week’ challenge kicks off on July 16 with a minimum €10,000 target and the daunting task of scaling summits in four-to-five counties each day, concluding with the 918m Galtymore on the Limerick/Tipperary border. Richard’s fundraiser can be supported until August 6 at www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/DrRichardHorgan32CountyPeaks
