Dillon calls for N5 Economic Study

A Mayo TD has called for an Economic Study to further develop opportunities on the N5.

Deputy Alan Dillon said the opening of the 20-kilometre N5 dual carriageway between Turlough and Westport by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was a significant investment of €250m and is a wonderful development.

“However, we need to capitalise on this development. I am now calling on the Western Development Commission (WDC ) to commission an Economic Study on the N5 to further develop critical infrastructure, enterprise and job creation as well as further enhancing our tourism sector,” said Deputy Dillon.

He added: “We now have a unique opportunity to promote the significant strengths in the towns of Castlebar and Westport as one regional growth centre, thereby ensuring continued investment into our region.”

Deputy Dillon said as a member of the Transport Committee in Dáil Éireann he has a number of priorities which he intends to continue to raise, including the N5 Ballaghaderreen to Scramogue realignment; the continuation of the Longford to Mullingar project as well as the N17 Knock to Collooney project.

“Each of these projects are crucial for improving our transportation networks, enhancing road safety and most especially support economic development and growth in our region. They will also improve the overall quality of life in the areas they serve.”
