Get your free heart check-up

Cardiovascular disease remains the single biggest killer in County Mayo, accounting for almost 40 per cent of all deaths, however in a bid to save lives and to reduce the impact of cardiovascular disease on families living in Mayo, Croí in partnership with HSE West Mayo Primary, Community and Continuing Care division, has launched a major drive to promote and provide heart health check-ups under the Heart Smart Mayo programme.

Over the coming weeks, a team of heart nurse specialists will visit community groups throughout the county, providing a free cardiovascular check-up to those over 40 years of age who have not attended their GP in the last year for a cholesterol check.

The cardiac risk assessment offers a cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure check, together with an assessment of BMI, nutrition, and physical activity. Each assessment lasts approximately 25 minutes and fasting is not required.

The team will visit: The GAA Complex, Bangor Erris on Monday June 15 from 9.30am to 4pm (contact Nuala Noone on 097 83146 ) and Balla Community Resource Centre, Balla on Tuesday June 16 from 9.30am to 4pm (contact Bridie on 094 936 5846 ).

Places for these check-ups are available by appointment only and must be booked through the contacts at each centre, between 9.30am and 12 noon at least a few days beforehand or directly with Ailish Houlihan, Croí Heart Smart Mayo co-ordinator on 094 904 9055.
