Completion date approaching for New N5 project

Good progress is being made on The N5 Westport to Turlough Road Project, members of Castlebar MD were informed this week and the completion date for the works is projected for some time in the second quarter of the year.

An update report to members this week states: "The project involves the design and construction of approximately 20km of Type 2 dual carriageway and approximately 7.5km of single carriageway (Type 1, 2 & 3 ) - and includes the upgrade of a 2.5km section of the N59 Westport to Mulranny national secondary road at Barleyhill - and also includes the design and construction of 2 no. compact grade separated junctions, 6 no. at grade roundabouts, 2 no. rail bridges over the Dublin to Westport rail line and 24 no. bridge structures.

"Wills BAM Joint Venture are the contractors for the construction of the N5 Westport to Turlough Road and the anticipated date for the completion of the contract is Q2 2023.

"Section C (Derrylea to Dublin Road ) is progressing very well and the finishing touches to the mainline are being done, but there is some work to be done on the sideroads and as a result of the recent Road Safety Audit, before Substantial Completion can be achieved for this section. It is anticipated that this section will be opened to traffic soon.

"Paving works are progressing very well on Section B (Knockranny to Derrylea ) with 96% of this section fully surfaced. It is planned to conduct the Road Safety Audit on this section by the end of March.

"Median barrier erection is 79% complete and it is planned to conduct the Road Safety Audit on this section by the end of March. Works on Drainage, Ducting and Accommodation Works for landowners are continuing. Works on Safety Barriers and Fencing are progressing well throughout.

"The current progress on the project is as follows: Site Clearance, Topsoil Strip, Earthworks: & Capping: Substantially Complete Topsoil Restoration 96% Complete Fencing 61% Complete Environmental Barriers 74% Complete Safety Barriers 74% Complete Drainage: 88% Complete Service Ducts 89% Complete Concrete Surface Water Channels 92% Complete Subbase 99% Complete Roadbase 96% Complete Binder 95% Complete Surface Course 89% Complete Traffic Signs 60% Complete Road Markings 60% Complete Kerbs Footways & Paved Areas 77% Complete Lighting & Electrical 79% Complete Landscaping 64% Complete Accommodation Works 73% Complete.

"The Major Structures in the Castlebar area are substantially complete with all of them opened to traffic. Traffic management arrangements are in place in various locations in the Castlebar area. These will change and will only be intermittent as works to the structures and roundabouts are finished and tie-ins to the existing road network is being constructed.

"The current Traffic Management arrangements for all roads are for intermittent lights during working hours all through the month of March, where required. Current information on the Contractor’s traffic management plans is on their Project Website, www.n5w2t.com, and they provide weekly information for the Mayo County Council Website for the public’s information.

"There has been complaints on the condition of local roads used by the contractor during the works and these are to be investigated fully."

Percent for Art Scheme

"The Percent for Art commission focusses on the communities of Islandeady, Breaffy and Turlough – Parke with a budget of €22,000 per location. The artist, James Winnett, was awarded the commission recently for all three communities.
