There will be a meeting of the Mayo COPD support group on Thursday, March 30, at 3pm in Tennis Club, Castlebar.

Retired Civil Servants AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Retired Civil and Public Servants Association [Mayo Branch] will take place in the Ellison Hotel Castlebar [F23 V279] on Thursday next March 30, beginning at 11.00 am.

The RCPSA, which was founded in 1945, represents over 8,000 retired Civil Servants from all Government Departments and Public Servants from An Post, Eir, Teagasc, Coillte, Irish Aviation Authority etc.

Membership is also open to widowed persons in receipt of a public service pension.

The Association engages directly with Government Departments, making approaches and submissions on relevant issues, including annual pre-Budget submissions. We are affiliated to the Alliance of Retired Public Servants.

We engage with the Alliance, and with other organisations representing retired public servants, to fight for improved services for members. We are working to improve communications and enhance the position of the Association and its members.

Mayo Historical & Archaeological Society Lecture

Lecture by Dr David McGuinness on the "Bullaun Stones Popular Religion and the Reconstruction of Irish Early Medieval Pilgrimage Landscapes".

David McGuinness was awarded his MA (1997 ) and PhD (2007 ) degrees from the School of Archaeology, UCD, with theses on the history of Irish megalithic tomb studies and on Irish rock-basins or ‘bullaun stones’ respectively.

Having tutored in archaeology in UCD (1998-2001 ), he went on to lecture in Irish archaeology in the Institute of Irish Studies at the University of Liverpool (2001-2006 ). From 2007 he worked with the late Dr Michael Herity as Assistant Editor in the publication of John O’Donovan’s famous Ordnance Survey Letters, and since 2012 he has been Director of the Prehistoric Burial Mounds of County Westmeath Project, funded by the County Council’s Heritage Forum and undertaken in association with Westmeath Archaeological & Historical Society. He has published articles on megalithic tombs, bullaun stones and the history of Irish archaeology.The talk will be held on Wednesday, March 29 at 8pm in the ATU ( Atlantic Technological University ) Castlebar .

Swinford

Free electrical collection in Swinford

There will be a free electrical collection in Swinford on April 1.

This year's collection point is at the Swinford community centre beside the golf club. The collection is between 10am to 4pm on Saturday, April 1 and everthing with a plug or a battery, from a washing machine to a remote control will be accepted.

Batteries and light bulbs are also accepted.

Swinford annual Good Friday spring clean

The Swinford Tidy Towns annual Good Friday spring clean will take on place on April 7.

All help is greatly appreciated. Litter pickers and bags will be provided. Meet at the Courthouse at 11AM on Good Friday.

Balla:

Spring Clean-Up

Balla Tidy Towns, in conjunction with Balla Secondary School and Balla National School, will carry out a Spring clean-up of the town on Tuesday, March 28 from 10am. All are welcome to get involved. The group will meet at the monument in The Square, Balla for a biodiversity discussion with an ecologist before undertaking the clean-up operation.

Easter Plans for Balla CRD

An Indoor Market will be held in Balla Community Centre on Easter Saturday, April 8 from 10am until 4pm with a variety of stalls including cakes and bakes, jewellery, crafts, knitwear, homemade jams, and much more. An Easter Egg Hunt for children will take place at 2pm starting from the community centre and following a supervised trail into the woodlands.

Woodfield Church Restoration Concert

Balla Community Centre will host John McNicholl and his band in concert on Friday, March 31 at 8pm, doors open from 7.30pm, with all proceeds towards Woodfield Church Restoration. Tickets are priced at €25 and can be purchased by calling 0851203921.

Kids Ballet Classes

Balla Active Retirement Association (ARA ) meets every Friday at 3pm in the community centre. New members are welcome.

Bangor Hall Bingo

Bangor Hall Bingo has returned on Thursday nights at 8pm. Our confined inhouse raffle for an Apple iPad air worth €1000 will be held on this Thursday March 30. You must be playing bingo on the night to win. Tickets are not on sale in the community. Tickets are only available for purchase at bingo venue and are confined to 200. An exciting new Womens’ Shed group is currently being formed in Bangor Hall. Watch this space for more information.

Public exhibition regarding Kilsallagh Wind farm

EDF Renewable, Kilsallagh Wind Farm, will host a public exhibition in Bangor Parish hall on the March 28.

The project, located in a forested area to the northeast of Slieve Carr, will comprise of 13 turbines and have a generating capacity to power the equivalent of about 50,000 homes.

If the project receives planning permission and is constructed, a Community Benefit Fund will be established, to support positive local initiatives and activities.

The public exhibition will be held at Bangor Erris Parish Hall from 3pm to 8pm on Tuesday, March 28.

There is no need to register in advance and all are welcome to attend.

Bangor hall open for bookings

Bangor Hall is now open for meetings, games, events, dancing, childrens’ parties, cookery classes etc.

Bangor Hall has a fully fitted kitchen, and three centrally heated meeting rooms depending on the size of your event. A sound system is available on request.

Ballintubber

Passion Play at Ballintubber Abbey:

Ballintubber Abbey celebrates the 33rd Anniversary of the Passion Play.

For the past thirty two years those who have witnessed this moving drama have been stirred by the story as it is portrayed by the people of Ballintubber.

Many have come back year after year to experience it and have brought others with them. If you have not seen it perhaps you would spare one hour on Monday April 3, Tuesday 4, and Wednesday 5, at 9.00pm to witness this drama.

As it takes place outdoors you are advised to bring suitable clothing.
