At the start of 2023 Mayo Sports Partnership partnered with Triathlon Ireland to roll out Tri Heroes within schools in Mayo. Tri Heroes teaches primary and secondary school pupils of all ages and abilities cycling, running and where facilities allow – swimming.
The programme has been designed by Triathlon Ireland to be both fun and challenging; and can be run as part of a school’s curriculum or as an after-school activity.
At the end of the course (which is normally run over five 45min sessions ), each student gets the chance to take part in a mini-duathlon (bike-run ) or mini-triathlon (swim-bike-run ).
For Mayo Tri Heroes 2023 - 18 Schools and 750 kids signed up and have been learning additional skills through running, cycling and swimming led by their schools, guided by Triathlon Ireland and Mayo Sports Partnership.
Last Tuesday and Wednesday, March 14 and 15, as an end event, Mayo Sports Partnership were delighted to host their ‘Splash and Dash Event’ where 14 schools and 600 students took part in a swim and run event at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar.
“We are thrilled with the response and Mayo Sports Partnership are delighted to be the first LSP in the country to roll out this programme in partnership with Triathlon Ireland” Deirdre Donnelly Community Sports Development Officer Mayo Sports Partnership.
