Mayo golfer to lead the challenge at 3 Irish Women’s Open Strokeplay

The 3 Irish Women’s Open Strokeplay will take place on Saturday June 20 at Douglas Golf Club in Cork, where Mayo golfer Niamh Kitching will be one of the strongest Irish challengers at the competition.

A strong field will see 32 overseas competitors travelling from Australia, England, Finland, France, Germany, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales. Leona Maguire, enjoying her best start to a season, will be one of her main rivals in the 72 player field, all playing off a handicap of six or less. With a host of senior and junior internationals on show, Kitching will need to be at her best to lift the silverware on Sunday afternoon.

Agnes McLoughlin had a busy time rearranging the trophy cabinet at her home in Carrowholly over the weekend. Her son Thomas whose career began back in 2001 when he won the under-16 Connacht Close Championship at Carrick-on-Shannon, was the winner of the individual Scratch Cup at the Mayo County Cup event held at Swinford on Saturday last. An honourable mention must go to non-playing county cup captain, Padraig Kennedy, whose team selection ensured back to back victories for Westport.

Thomas’ father, Padraig McLoughlin, was a very popular winner of the Mayo Seniors Golf Tournament on Wednesday last at Westport Golf Club. With 17 club representatives coming under “starter’s orders” in a field of in excess of 130 golfers, this competition is now firmly established on the golfing calendar. In perfect playing conditions, the 2008 Golfer of the Year secured another victory for Westport. Padraig now joins Des Mahon and Jack McAleer as Westport winners on the Mayo Senior’s Roll of Honour.

Sponsor Dave McDermott welcomed all those present to the prize presentation and was delighted that 11 clubs would be represented in the winners’ enclosure. A special mention to Willie Elliot, former captain of Westport Golf Club (’06 ) who made his senior debut as the youngest entrant in the competition.

Next weekend’s gents’ competition is the AIB (GOY ) strokeplay competition.
