New Mayo manager Kevin McStay will have to continue his planning for the upcoming season without the services of Oisin Mullin after it was announced last week he would be heading for the AFL in Australia.
The Kilmaine star who is a two time GAA Young Footballer of the Year, will be joining up with the current AFL Champions the Geelong Cats as a category B rookie, having initially turned down the chance to move to the Aussie side 12 months ago and opt to throw his lot in with Mayo for another year.
Head of List Management for Geelong Andrew Mackie said: "As a Club we appreciate the magnitude of moving overseas and understood Oisin’s reasons for remaining in Ireland and not joining us for this season.
"We are thrilled he will now join the Cats for season 2023, he is a gifted talent, however most importantly a quality person who will be a great addition to our playing squad.
"Oisin has had another impressive season with Mayo and we are looking forward to welcoming him and his partner Jess to the Club and to Geelong."
Mullin will join Zach Tuohy and Mark O’Connor as the Clubs men’s Irish players; he will not be the only Mayo player at Geelong with former Mayo LGFA star Rachel Kearns one of the Cats AWFL stars having made the move to Australia herself last season.
Oisin made his league debut with Mayo in January 2020 in the Allianz Football league against Donegal and has gone on to play for Mayo in 15 league and 13 championship games in his three years as a senior footballer scoring 2-4 in those games.
Along the way Mullin won two Connacht Senior Football Championships and played in the All Ireland Senior Finals in 2020 and 2021 and along the way was named as young footballer of the year in both those seasons.
Mullin has also won an All Ireland Schools B title with Ballinrobe Community School in 2017 and a Mayo GAA Junior Football Championship with his club Kilmaine in 2020.
