Man failed to provide sample after mounting footpath

A Russian who was observed veering from side to side before he mounted a footpath, and after being arrested on the suspicion of drink driving refused to provide a sample, was disqualified from driving for six years at Castlebar District Court this week.

Superintendent Willie Keaveney outlined that on October 10 2008, gardaí observed a red Opel Astra veering from side to side on Richard Street, Castlebar, before it mounted a kerb. After Aleksanders Isajeus, 6 Springfield Court, Castlebar, was arrested on the suspicion of drink driving he resisted arrest and became hostile at the Garda station, where he was abusive to gardaí and a number of gardaí had to restrain him.

Isajeus, who represented himself, works in the car park at the back of Staunton’s Pharmacy and has a previous conviction for drink driving.

For not providing a sample Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined the defendant €1,000 and disqualified him from driving for six years. For careless driving Isajeus was convicted and fined €500.
