Westport has secured an extra €100,000 from the Department of the Environment and Local Government to progress the eight outstanding recommendations of the EPA action plan. The funding was secured on foot of a recent EPA report regarding aluminium levels in the drinking water in Westport and Louisburgh.
Westport town councillor and county council candidate Cllr Dave Keating had asked for a status report from the council on the issue. Cllr Keating said: “I have been informed that the change over to a new treatment chemical, polyaluminium chloride, has significantly reduced levels of aluminium in the water supply, and that this should be reflected in the next EPA report.”
The issue of the Srah/Westport and the Westport/Louisburgh schemes was also raised by the Sinn Féin councillor who said: “Contracts have yet to be awarded for the Srah/Westport and Westport/Louisburg schemes. A loan application of €8.2 million has been made to the Dept of the Environment and if sanctioned, a further specific approval will have to be sought before any contract can be awarded.”
