Ballyhaunis
The Hazelhills timber stroke competition in Ballyhaunis golf club last weekend was won by Shay Walsh playing off 13 and getting a score of 63. Diarmuid Finnegan came second with a score of 64 playing off six, while Paul Hickey took the bronze medal position with a 66 off 17.
The ladies’ competition in the east Mayo club was won by Kung Fanning who scored a 66 off 19. Breege Folliard was six behind her with a 72 off 36, while Marietta Potgieter came home in third with a 73 off 17.
Westport Golf Club
In the Pat Bree Golfer of the Year competition Ted Walsh Junior was the big winner with a 39 off 19 (back nine ) being enough to put him ahead of Jack Healy who also got 39pts playing off 21. The gross prize went to Shane Larkin who scored 32pts off two, while the top four was completed by Ciaran McGettigan and Neil Chambers on 38pts and 37pts respectively. The category one competition was won by Sean Hoban with 37pts off 11, the category two by J.F O’Malley with 37 off 17, John Gavin won the category three with 35pts off 22 and the senior prize went to Bill Hopkins with a score of 35pts off 12.
Currently Neil Chambers leads the board in the Golfer of the Year competition with a total of 580pts, Ted Walsh Junior is in second place, Jack Healy third, and Matthew Golden and John Marry completing the top five in the list.
Jack Bredin was the big winner in the seniors’ competition last weekend, with a score of 38 pts. John Marry was only half a point behind in second and a further half point back in third was Michael Kearns.
The third hole at Westport is giving up hole-in-ones like “snuff at a wake.” A day after Trevor Nutt aced during the Christian Golfers week, Jack Bredin holed out with his trademark six iron. Playing partner Pat Murphy was heard to comment, at the 19th hole, later in the afternoon: “We got a hole-in-one at the third”.
Next Sunday’s gents’ competition is a Bould Biddies, sponsored, stableford event. Although not a golfer, Breege Kilroy, who runs her premises on Mill Street as one of the premier traditional music venues in Westport, is well represented at Westport Golf Club, by daughter Jenny and son-in-law Sean Durkan. The couple would surely be one of the favourites, if there was a husband and wife stableford competition, played during the year. That’s not a bad idea.
